Support strengthens our legal efforts and outreach—signs, materials, and social media—to grow community involvement and amplify our message.
We are residents of Danada Woods, Fairmeadow, Naper Commons, and surrounding neighborhoods working together on a crucial zoning and city council matter that will significantly impact our community. We want to be clear: we are not opposed to data centers. We understand their role in modern infrastructure.
Our concern lies in the placement of a data center in the midst of established neighborhoods—near parks, playgrounds, and close to vulnerable individuals, including children, the elderly, and those with compromised immune systems. This project is best suited for an appropriate commercial or industrial area, not one where families live, play, and gather.
To ensure we are fully and fairly represented, we have retained an attorney. We are raising funds to cover his hourly rate, allowing us to continue receiving expert legal support throughout this process. Along with legal representation, we must also invest in community outreach—expenses include, but are not limited to, signs, marketing materials, and social media campaigns. These tools ensure our neighbors remain informed, engaged, and united in this effort. By funding these costs, donors are not only supporting legal expertise but also strengthening our community's collective voice. Transparency and visibility are vital to building trust, and these investments allow us to honor the commitment we made to our neighbors when we asked for their support.
Having an attorney is essential for several reasons:
- Accountability for the developer. Legal representation demonstrates that we are serious, attentive, and prepared to scrutinize every detail. This encourages the developer to strive for greater transparency and accuracy, while signaling that we are ready to take further action if necessary.
- Credibility with the city. Attorneys bring professionalism and a level of seriousness that ensures council members and staff recognize our concerns as valid, researched, and well-supported.
- Legitimacy and accuracy. Lawyers operate under ethical obligations that prevent misrepresentation of facts. In public meetings, citizens may unintentionally share incomplete or inaccurate information. An attorney provides verified, fact-based statements that command respect.
- Strength of legal arguments. This zoning decision must comply with Naperville’s code and conditional use requirements. Based on the city’s ordinances and master plan, there are strong reasons why this project may not qualify. While we have voiced these concerns, an attorney is uniquely qualified to present the legal arguments effectively. Naperville has had multiple similar cases in the past decade where attorney involvement made a critical difference.
- Protecting our homes and long-term quality of life. Investing in legal support now is far less costly than dealing with the consequences later. If we do nothing, we risk significant impacts on home values, daily living, neighborhood safety, and the well-being of our most vulnerable residents. We must fight for what we have and protect our future.
By pooling our resources, we ensure our neighborhoods have a strong, credible, and well-informed voice. Any contribution—large or small—helps us stand together and advocate for the safe, appropriate development our community deserves.
