Aim

A luminous origami crane made of laser-cut steel and inspired by Japanese paper designs. Built by the Steel Tigerlillies of Milwaukee, WI

Physical Description

The iconic, colorful "paper" crane rises over 15 feet tall, its wings angled forward to touch the ground like a bird sheltering its nest. This gesture creates a shaded antechamber—an inviting threshold where desert wanderers can pause and gather.

Constructed from laser-cut steel, and colorful plastic, the sculpture glows from within via integrated LED lighting. Its folded geometry evokes origami traditions, casting patterned light and dappled shade that animate the space with shifting color and shadow.

The crane functions as a beacon for camaraderie, offering visual presence and refuge in Black Rock City.

At its heart is a small chamber with a "stained glass" ceiling. The chamber may also hosts interventions, such as subtle sound elements or small crane sculptures, contributed by collaborators.

Interactivity

In addition to the wings creating shaded zones for citizens roaming the desert, the central shelter offers an interactive space for sharing wishes. Visitors may leave a wish and discover one left by another through simple, tactile exchanges such as handwritten wishes or notes folded into the origami cranes to be burned as part of the temple. These low-tech interactions prioritize immediacy, accessibility, and durability in the desert environment, allowing participation to unfold without screens, power, or instruction.

The piece also supports communal moments of making. We plan to collaborate with the community to host at least one gathering centered on folding paper cranes, inviting participants to slow down, learn a shared gesture, and contribute directly to the evolving interior of the sculpture. As wishes accumulate, the crane's heart becomes a living archive shaped by many hands—quiet, collective, and continuously renewed by those who pass through. Any wishes collected will be burned.

As an incentive;  each 5$ donated via this site, with folks who put their instagram handle (or whatever public place where you are responsive) in the Crowdfunder donation comments will get a name in the hat to permanently adopt the Steel Tigerlilly light up mirror kitten. (This tells us you _want_ the kitten and gives us breadcrumbs to find you on the world as this site doesn't collect/share that info). Delivery to Milwaukee/Madison/Chicago, or Black Rock City (or you can cover postage) for the new mir-cat parent.

This kitten is approximately 34' tall, 18" wide and 16" long.  It is powered by 24v lights, is water resistant if the  power supply is contained.  It will come with a supply for 110 power and a controller and remote.

All the donations received support the project materials, fuel, big truck rentals, and the like.  In the odd chance of overage, it will remain to support future projects and opportunities for the group.
