We’re a group of friends working alongside an Afghan family, supporting them to find security and stability in Minnesota.
Who We Are Helping
We’re a group of friends, neighbors, and community members working alongside an Afghan family, supporting them to find safety and build a home in Minneapolis. We are sponsoring the Sherzai (alias) family in partnership with the International Institute of Minnesota. This family has received Special Immigrant Visas (SIVs), a specialty visa reserved for those who have aided the US Military, and subsequently face serious risk in their home country.
The Sherzai family includes two parents and their five children, four sons and one daughter. They are a young, close-knit family who value education, hard work, and hospitality. The father is the embodiment of kindness and eager to share with others his contributions to the American military; the mother is a social butterfly hungry to learn English and create her personal network; and their children are thoughtful, smart, and so excited to begin their American school experience. Together this family is prepared and ready to take on the cultural hurdles of their new life in Minnesota.
Why We’re Raising Funds
In sponsoring this family, we must raise money to help cover the first few months of resettlement costs (housing, food, clothing, and transportation) so that they can prioritize education, language acquisition, cultural navigation, employment opportunities, and building their future in Minnesota.
The Sherzai family arrived in the U.S. about a month ago, hopeful to start this new chapter of their lives in Minnesota. Over the past month, as ICE actions have escalated in our community, uncertainty and fear have become part of their reality. The family is no longer safe to leave their home for fear of being detained at a bus stop, at a store, or even on their way to school. After the help that this family has given to helping the US in Afghanistan, they deserve protection and a safe place to call home. We are raising funds to help provide stability, safety, and reassurance during this critical transition period.
How You Can Help
Donate to our Crowdfunder to help cover the family’s resettlement costs. Share this campaign to others in your network. Together we can help this family stay safe and begin a new chapter.
As new Americans, the Sherzai family members have unique perspectives of the world to share with us. Together they have faced hardship and challenges head-on with courage, open minds, and willingness to adapt. Your financial contribution will help them battle their new challenges, ensure they are safe, and give them the foundation they need to thrive in their new American home with dignity.
