Many women entrepreneurs in the developing world are artisans by trade. From my experience consulting women entrepreneurs throughout the world, I have found that most local handicraft markets (mostly targeted at tourists) are saturated and most artisans do not have the education, the resources, or the knowledge of foreign markets that is required to succesfully export. Therefore, the artisans struggle with growing their businesses and maintaining profitability because local competition is fierce, especially due to a lack of differentiation and innovation. Although this situation is common in the handicraft market of almost every developing country, MachuMama has decided to start by tackling this problem in Peru, and after developing a successful model solution, expanding globally. MachuMama is a social enterprise that accelerates women's entrepreneurship by developing and exporting premium and unique artisan products from Ayacucho, Peru to the United States. MachuMama pays fair trade prices for the artisan products and a portion of the profit is donated to local non-profits to facilitate business training for the women artisans. Currently, MachuMama is in its start-up phase and will be launching the sale of its first products in the Southwest US market in Fall 2012. MachuMama will begin with offering handmade laptop and iPad covers with traditional colorful Peruvian embroidery designs. Each product will be unique and its purchase will directly assist a Peruvian artisan with gaining education that will develop her personal business management skills. Look forward to the launch of our website www.machumama.com in 2013! Become a MachuMama by supporting Peruvian women artisans!

Established in the fall of 2010, the Thunderbird Angel Network was born from the vision of people associated with Thunderbird School of Global Managements Walker Center for Global Entrepreneurship to develop a robust network of investors and entrepreneurs leveraging Thunderbirds network of alumni, students and friends. During the first year and a half of meeting, members of the Thunderbird Angel Network have invested in five early stage companies. There are over 60 angel investors in the TAN network and members are currently conducting due diligence on several exciting companies and working with the management of companies to develop solutions to items that may trigger funding in the future. The Thunderbird Angel Network is a medium through which individual investors can consider investments in early-stage companies having the potential to grow rapidly. As the network is based at Thunderbird School of Global Management, a hotspot for global business, the Thunderbird Angel Network is unique because its investors are interested in both domestic and international deals. The Thunderbird Angel Network's niche is investing in early stage companies with the potential to expand globally. The group meets approximately every other month over dinner and listens to presentations from candidate companies. If members show interest in a presenting company, further due diligence and deal terms are developed. Members act on their own behalf and make their own individual investment decisions. The Thunderbird Angel Network also offers educational opportunities to its members regarding such topics as the characteristics of a first class management team, evaluation of the business plans of early stage companies, due diligence, valuation, term sheets and other relevant topics from global experts and practitioners. The Thunderbird Angel Network is a member of the Angel Capital Association.
While Acurio Restaurantes has been successful in implementing and promoting social enterprise practices in its own restaurants, there is still much more that needs to be accomplished in order to support the growth of social enterprises in Peru. The team was tasked with promoting the development of social enterprises in the food industry of Peru by working with both sides of the supply chain: farmers and restaurants. The team worked with ANPE, a non-profit organization of over 12,000 organic farmers in Peru, to create a business plan for a for-profit distribution center that would allow farmers from all the regions of Peru to sell their products to restaurants in Lima. Working with several high-end restuarants in Lima, the team developed a new marketing strategy for the farmers so that they can increase sales, develop direct client relationships with restaurants, provide better products and services, and create a market for some of the currently unknown native specialty produce products. ANPE is focused on sustainability, promoting organic growing practices and creating a positive social impact on the farmers' standard of living by helping them commericalize their products. Assisting ANPE farmers promotes social enterprise practices in the restaurant supply chain and also increases the number of restaurants that purchase directly from the social enterprise farmers as opposed to middlemen or supermarkets.
