Biography

Dr. Granat has been in solo private family practice in the same office in South Miami since 1971, and has been a volunteer clinical preceptor since then, teaching many medical students, residents, nurse practitioners and others, both in her office and at the Medical School. She is a Clinical Professor of Family Medicine and Community Health, is a University of Miami Medical School Graduate, with residency and fellowship training at Hospital of St. Raphael in New Haven, CT. and at Yale University. From1998 to 2004, while maintaining her private practice, she joined the Family Medicine faculty at the University of Miami part-time with a special interest in curriculum development. Authorship: She has published articles, book chapters and opinion pieces. (see CV). She edited the Dade County Medical Association Journal for 3 years, developing themed issues and writing monthly editorials. She served on the Board of Patient Care, a general medical journal for 11 years after 3 yrs as a manuscript reviewer. Teaching: In the department of Family Medicine she developed the Case Write-up Conference, as a device to encourage and successfully accomplish publication of interesting case reports among the residents. In 1997, medical students inducted her into AOA, the medical honor society, for her contribution to medical student teaching; in 1998, she received the Teacher of the Year Award. Honors: Among other honors: •2002 American Academy of Family Physicians National Exemplary Teaching Award for Part-Time Faculty •FAFP Exemplary (part-time) Teaching Award, 2002 for Florida •First Place Recognition in “The Heart of Family Practice” story contest, held in observance of the 30th anniversary of the newspaper and the specialty of family practice, for essay, “Late Payments” Family Practice News, October, 2001. •Best Physicians. Cassell-Connelly, 1998, 2000-2001, 2003,2004 – most years between plus 2011 - 2012 •Top Physician, October 1998. Miami Metro magazine. Activism: She has initiated and participated in activist causes aimed at changing unjust or dangerous practices impinging on patient care, public health and medical practice. Among them were the removal of thinly-disguised cigarette ads on public lampposts; the March to Tallahassee for malpractice insurance reform, where an unjust law was actually repealed; and blocking a merger of the hospital system where she is on staff with a Catholic hospital system, which would have required imposing its rules affecting nearly the entire southern half of Miami-Dade county. Charity and voluntarism: She has volunteered at several free clinics and homeless facilities and served on numerous hospital committees and the Disaster/Hurricane teams
