Why We Started This Company
17 years after Craigslist, when I was up for renewal, I looked for apartments in New York to see what was out there, and how much places cost. I found out the hard way that the apartment search experience still sucks balls. I knew there had to be another way. I looked for places to get the information about rents in bulk and to make them available. The city didn't have it. The IRS might have some, but it's private. Landlords have some, but they don't have an incentive to share.
What Sets Us Apart
RentHackr is a community of apartment dwellers dedicated to transparency in real estate. It’s a place where you can see how much apartments rent for, where your friends rent, when renters plan to move, and it lets you follow buildings to see future openings before the rest of the market. Instead of getting listings from landlords and agents, our apartment data is provided by current renters. User-generated listings are better because they add rich social information, intent, and transparency.
Our Keys To Success
• Great design and execution of the RentHackr product • Building a postive, talented, and focused team • Awareness in our target markets • Traction with renters • Subscription sales to leasing agents
We put an MVP up to test the hypothesis that renters would provide their own rental information in order to join a community where they can access all other member's information anonymously. We validated with 5,000 users and their leases registered in 5 months. We were accepted to Startup Chile and went down there to develop v1 of the RentHackr product. We're nearing completion and launch of that vastly improved product, and we're super excited to get it out to the rental community!
